A five-member delegation from the South Pacific French territory, New Caledonia attended UNR’s ERGI Academy in summer, 2023. The two-week (June 19-July 1, 2023) program at the ERGI Academy, funded by the Australian Government, consisted of short courses in ten specific topical areas and visits to an active gold mining operation plus the historical mining town, Virginia City, in Nevada. The program started with a general overview of energy mineral mining, followed by short courses on topical areas, such as mining data acquisition and management, mineral leasing, and licensing, mine reclamation and environmental management, fiscal terms and contracts, geographic information system, international standards of resource and reserve reporting, social licensing to operate, mine health & safety and mine life cycle analysis. The short course on each topic was prepared and delivered by a faculty expert from UNR’s Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering or a known expert from the industry in Western US.
